A Piece of TOPGUN History in Plain View, Preserved Through Art

Few scenes from the original Top Gun movie are more memorable than the Officer's Club bar scene. While audiences focused on Maverick, Charlie, Goose, and the camaraderie of naval aviators, a genuine piece of TOPGUN history quietly occupied the background, and seen by millions, yet recognized by only a few.

The image was an original F-14 Tomcat photograph captured by Captain C.J. "Heater" Heatley III during his years flying the legendary fighter. The photograph appeared prominently, backlit behind several key characters throughout the scene, including Maverick, Charlie, Goose, and even Heater himself.

More than four decades later, retired U.S. Army Apache pilot and military aviation artist Murray Jones collaborated with Heater to transform that iconic shot into a stunning work of fine art. The result is "The Bar Scene From TOP GUN," the inaugural release from Full Sail Fine Art's Featured Military Aviation Artist Series and a centerpiece of the new TOPGUN Legacy Collection.

As one of the few authentic artistic collaborations directly connected to both the real TOPGUN community and the enduring legacy of Top Gun, this work celebrates the people, stories, and aircraft that continue to inspire generations of aviators, photographers, artists, and enthusiasts around the world.

The Artist

Murray Jones is a retired U.S. Army Apache helicopter pilot whose military aviation experience informs every brushstroke of his work. Known for capturing the atmosphere, precision, and emotion of military flight, Jones brings a pilot's perspective to aviation art, creating works that resonate with collectors, veterans, and aviation enthusiasts alike.
