Nearly forty-five years ago, a VF-1 Wolfpack flight lead over the South China Sea saw a formation he knew would last about two seconds. He passed the lead to his wingman, slid back into the number three position, and reached for his camera. The image would later become part of Top Gun history.

C.J. “Heater” Heatley III has spent a lifetime at the intersection of Naval Aviation, photography and iconic imagery. An F-14 Tomcat pilot, TOPGUN instructor and accomplished photojournalist, Heater had a remarkable ability to recognize and capture moments that others might never see.
Through The Ready Room, Heater is helping us preserve those moments in his own words, sharing the stories behind the photographs, people and experiences that helped shape an extraordinary life in Naval Aviation.
