Preserving the People, Stories, and Legacy of Military Aviation
Before Top Gun became one of the most iconic aviation films ever made, there were the aviators who lived the reality behind the mythology - the fighter pilots, instructors, and crews who defined an extraordinary era of naval aviation and pushed the limits of the F-14 Tomcat.
The Full Sail Fine Art - TOPGUN Legacy Collection brings together authentic works inspired by that world through collaborations with military aviators whose lives intersected with both the history of TOPGUN and the cultural legacy of the original Top Gun film.

The Real TOPGUN Connection
C. J. "Heater" Heatley III
At the center of this story is CAPT C.J. “Heater” Heatley III, USN (Ret.) - F-14 Tomcat pilot, TOPGUN instructor, aviation photographer, and one of the real TOPGUN aviators connected to the original film’s production. Working alongside director Tony Scott and appearing in the film itself, Heater helped bridge the gap between authentic naval aviation culture and the cinematic world that introduced it to millions.

The Photograph That Started It All
In 1982, Heater photographed four F-14 Tomcats in formation over the South China Sea - an image he titled “Wolfpack on Patrol.” When producer Jerry Bruckheimer later viewed the photograph, he reportedly remarked that it looked like “Star Wars on Earth” - a phrase that would forever become associated with the image. Decades later, the photograph inspired artist Russell Recchion to create the painting Star Wars on Earth, preserving one of the most iconic visual expressions of the F-14 Tomcat era.
It is the fourth limited-edition print in the Full Sail Fine Art collection, and one of the rare collaborative works personally co-signed by C.J. “Heater” Heatley III, linking the artwork directly to the aviator whose photography and experiences helped inspire its creation.

A Legacy That Inspires the Next Generation
Decades later, that legacy continues to resonate across generations of aviators, artists, photographers, and collectors. Featured artist and Apache pilot, CW4 Murray Jones, U.S. Army (Ret.), was first inspired by Heater’s celebrated aviation photography and bestselling coffee table book, The Cutting Edge, before later collaborating with Heater to recreate the iconic "The Bar Scene from TOP GUN" F-14 painting seen in the original film.
