The second painting in Russell Recchion's Naval Aviation Collection captures what it looks like to land a 40,000-pound naval aircraft on a moving runway at sea. As the Super Hornet approaches the flight deck, its shadow sharpens against the steel-gray surface — an observation Recchion made many times peering out commercial airplane windows as his own shadow came into focus on landing.
The contrast between the aircraft's cool shadow, the steel deck, and the deep blue ocean dramatizes this 20" × 30" original oil on canvas. This may be the closest most of us will ever get to a carrier landing.
