The painting of the photo that inspired the movie Top Gun.

In 1982, F-14 pilot CJ "Heater" Heatley III captured an iconic cockpit photograph of Tomcats in formation over the South China Sea. When Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer happened upon the photo in a magazine at his dentist's office, he told his partner Don Simpson: "This looks like Star Wars on Earth — this is our next movie."

The photo became the cover of Heater's book The Cutting Edge, selling over 500,000 copies.

The Painting

Russell Recchion worked closely with Heater for over a year, transforming the iconic photograph into a masterful 40" × 60" oil painting — the fourth in his Naval Aviation Collection and the first to feature the legendary F-14 Tomcat. Heater granted Recchion artistic license to include authentic details only the pilot himself could visualize.

"I always knew someday an artist would come along to fulfill the vision I had when I clicked the shutter."
— CJ "Heater" Heatley III
